Aesthetic application of abrasion of daily life, which we use for making rough surfaces into smooth ones, is called dermabrasion. As you can easily understand, this procedure is used for reducing the rough look on the skin. Rough look usually results from the acnes that leave a scar or hypertrophic scars. The top layer of the skin is peeled during the procedure. Superficial wound that is created by the peeling is replaced by a fresh, tense skin after the recovery.
Skin abrasion surgery-dermabrasion
The type of anesthesia depends on the wideness of the area that will be applied dermabrasion. General anesthesia is necessary if it will be applied in wide areas, I prefer local anesthesia in the areas smaller than 10-15 centimeters. You can return home on the same day after the surgery. Pain is a slight burning feeling, this feeling is not too disturbing. Mostly, it can be relieved with a normal painkiller. An open wound develops when the skin is peeled with dermabrasion. If the wound is in an open area such as your face, it will be enough to use the pomades which I will advise before closing it with wound dressings. If the wound is in a closed location, it should be closed with bandages in order to prevent friction of the clothes and damaging.
Recovery Process after Dermabrasion
You can wash your wound and have a bath on the next day of the surgery. Do not be afraid to wash it, it will be alright, on the contrary, washing the wound with water and a light soap such as baby shampoo means cleaning of the wound which would replace wound care. Hesitation of watering the wound is a wrong belief. Wash away the wound every day, even twice a day. It becomes cleaner every time you wash it. Bacteria are removed, risk of infection gets lower and the wound recovers that fast. Recover of the wound is also dependent on the deepness of dermabrasion procedure. A superficial dermabrasion recovers faster, deeper it gets the longer it takes to recover. The deepest procedure takes 7-10 days to recover.
When the wound is healed, the surface is covered with a fresh skin. This new skin has a slight pink color as in each fresh wound just recovered. This pinkish color gets back to normal skin color slowly in a few weeks. This color can be closed with foundation creams easily if the procedure was applied to your face.
The risks of Dermabrasion
Sunlight should be avoided after the operation in the process of healing. A newly healed scar will be more sensitive to sunlight than the normal skin. Therefore, it is wrong to do this operation in summer months. The area of dermabrasion wound will be tanned 1-2 tones darker than the normal skin and it will cause color differences. If you have to have this operation in the summer, you should take extra precautions. I prefer to do this operation between the months October and March. I advise you do the same.
